Recommended Mobile Devices
Mobile devices such as PDAs, cell phones and smart phones are becoming a crucial part of daily business at RIT for many faculty and staff. These devices allow users to access e-mail, store documents, manage schedules and surf the web while on the go.
Unfortunately, mobile devices are not always designed with security in mind and are not as secure as most desktop computers. There are a number of ways in which information on a mobile device may be breached: theft of the device, attacks on your service provider, wireless hijacking or "sniffing", and unauthorized access. Because mobile devices may be more easily stolen or compromised, users of these devices must take necessary precautions when using them to store or access RIT Confidential information. Any mobile devices that store sensitive information must be capable of being configured to ensure appropriate protection.
Recommended and Non-recommended Mobile Devices
To ensure that RIT Confidential information will remain secure, you should use only devices that provide encryption while information is in transit and at rest. The devices on the list below provide better protection for RIT Confidential information. You must also register your device with the ITS Blackberry® Service.
Recommended
BlackBerry®
- BlackBerry® devices provide the simplest solution for handling RIT Confidential information on a mobile device. Protection is afforded by using only software and settings that come standard on BlackBerry® devices, and only a few simple configuration settings are necessary. ITS can provide information on using the recommended settings.
- Research In Motion provides lists of all compliant Blackberry® and Blackberry® enabled devices:
Non Recommended
BlackBerry® ConnectTM Enabled Devices
- Because of vulnerabilities with the underlying Operating Systems of these devices, BlackBerry® ConnectTM Enabled Devices are not recommended.
Windows Mobile Devices
- At this time, Windows Mobile Devices are not recommended for use with RIT Confidential information.
iPhones
- The iPhone does not provide sufficient security to protect RIT Confidential information.
